Our Helmet Process
First Steps
Good news, you have made the first step in the right direction! At Baby Bear Cranial Clinic we encourage your first step being educating yourself. Look around our website- there is tons of good information on our site.
We offer free consultations when you are not sure if your baby will require a helmet or not but would like to learn more about prevention, tummy time, head shapes and the cranial remolding process. We will often refer you to a physical therapist or chiropractic professional if you have not already participated in repositioning efforts. At the consultation we will get a better idea of your baby’s birth history, the repositioning efforts you have already undergone, take a series of measurements, and get a baseline scan with our safe 3D scanner.
Getting a Helmet
If it is determined that your baby requires a cranial remolding helmet we will determine if the claim can be submitted through insurance or if private pay is the best option. If private pay is the best option, we can begin the process as soon as you make the decision to process. If we are contracted with your insurance, we will gather all the objective information and supporting documentation (notes from your pediatrician, physical therapist, chiropractor, etc) and submit it to your insurance company to process prior authorization.
A cranial remolding helmet is made from a custom 3D scan. If we are not processing through insurance, a helmet can be ordered the same day as the evaluation and fit within 10 days. If we are processing through insurance it may take 7-21 days for an authorization to be processed. We will re-scan once this approval has been received.
A Delivery Appointment must be scheduled within 14 days of the scanning appointment (to make sure these are scheduled appropriately we do not offer online booking for these appointments.) Regular Follow Up Appointments will be scheduled following the delivery of the helmet.
The optimal time frame to begin cranial remolding therapy is between 4-6 months. Please keep in mind that it may take up 4 weeks from the date of evaluation to the time of delivery. Because of this, we recommend your baby is seen as early as possible, optimally between 3-4 months of age.
